Day 17
Logged 2657.4 nm - 722 nm left to go.
Yesterday was our slowest day in regards to miles covered HOWEVER not so slow in other areas. We flew the gennaker throughout the day and the night as the true winds are about 11 knots and the apparent 5 giving us an average speed of 5 knots and sometimes less. A good day for reading or fishing. Did I say fishing? As much as I opposed the boys fishing with the gennaker up (as in order to bring in their catch, we need to douse the gennaker to slow the boat down) I lost.
At around 17:00 we decided to tack the boat meaning changing the direction of the sails. At this point we still have the storm sail poled out as we actually think it is balancing the boat better and minimizing on the roll. Michel, always looking for shortcuts thinks he can handle all of this without taking the sails down and I did mention I believe the rolly seas.
After playing around, we left the storm jib partially up, removed the pole and doused the gennaker ... a good 20 minutes of playing around. We then pole out the gennaker only to find out it is not working so remove the pole, secure it, snuff the gennaker in it's sock, reset the storm jib with the pole, reset the collar of the gennaker that holds the clew onto our forestay, deploy the gennaker and oooopppppssss we caught a FISH ... and a fighter he was as he practically took all the line on the reel.
Douse the gennaker, secure it to the boat and all hands on fish duty. George holding the line with all his might, Michel barking orders to get the net, get the gloves, get the knive (I think you get it by know that the boys lacked a little organization .. did they really think they would catch a fish).
I run around, securing all the lines, pulling out all THEIR gear and in comes this 1 meter 15cm wahoo. Oh did I mention they also wanted me to take pictures. Let's just say the boys were a little more then happy starting to recite how to cook it or better yet, not to cook it and eat it raw as I was barking my ordered that no fish comes on board if it cannot be made into cubes or file ts right away.
Well this took about 2 hours to get everything cleaned up. I did mention I believe, that the gennaker is still snuffed and we are just drifting luckily for us in the right direction.
The boys had a wonderful BBQ of 2 hour old fish as well as some sushi style. I prepared rice and an artichole salad for them, cleaned up, and had a bowl of ceral with tea and chocolate.
Prior to sitting down to dinner, they did deploy the gennaker and we started to make our slow headway. So all in all, a little bit of diversity on Nyctea and happy crew and a catch up day to make up.
