Notice to Mariners
Canal Opening Update
May 12, 2017
Mariners are advised that some portions of the New York State Canal System may not open as scheduled on Friday, May 19.
Persistent high water resulting from abnormally heavy precipitation in central New York will likely prevent the opening of the Oswego Canal, and the Erie Canal between Oneida Lake and Lock E-25 (Mays Point) on May 19.
Currently, water levels and flows are preventing Canal Corporation crews from safely completing preparations to open these sections of the Canal System. As levels recede, Canal Corporation crews will continue these preparations and these sections will open to navigation only when conditions are safe for the boating public.
The Erie Canal from Waterford to Oneida Lake, and from Lock E-25 (Mays Point) to Tonawanda, the Champlain Canal, and the Cayuga-Seneca Canal between Seneca Lake and Cayuga Lake are all projected to open on May 19 as scheduled.
